Second, there is fermentation. When beneficial bacteria break down fiber, they produce short-chain fatty acids, most notably butyrate. The good news is that your colon responds quickly when you start feeding it well. Studies show meaningful shifts in the gut microbiome within days of increasing fiber intake. A few realistic starting points:

  • Front-load your day. Add berries, chia seeds, or oats to breakfast for an easy 8 to 10 grams before noon.
  • Keep the skins on. Much of the fiber in apples, pears, and potatoes lives in or just under the skin.
  • Swap refined grains for whole ones. Brown rice, whole grain bread, and barley all feed butyrate-producing bacteria.
  • Add legumes a few times a week. A half cup of black beans delivers about 7.5 grams of fiber.
